NEW THIS YEAR!
STONECIRCLE STRONGMAN
STONE LIFTING EVENT
FOR THE FIRST TIME AT THE LIGONIER HIGHLAND GAMES, WE WILL BE HOSTING A STONELIFTING EVENT CONSISTING OF DEMOS AND COMPETITION.
In Scotland there exist stones that have been lifted for centuries—stones that were lifted by those wishing to prove their worthiness to the Clans. These natural “Stones of Strength” are found throughout the glens and moors of Scotland. Fortunately, such stones will also be found at this year's Ligonier Highland Games for the same purpose: to find the strong. We invite you to attempt to lift the McClurg Stones in this unique and exciting event. The Ligonier Highland Games presents the Stone Circle Strongman Challenge.
Stone Circle Strongman Challenge Event and Rules:
The Stone Circle Strongman Challenge will be held at 2:15pm and at 4:15pm. Meet at the corner of the Main Field at the Stonelifting canopy to check in, register, and receive rules. Competition begins promptly at 2:30pm and 4:30pm. Each event has a 2 minute time limit. Final results will be tallied and cash prizes will be awarded at conclusion. $100 for 1st Place, $50 for 2nd, $25 for 3rd. Open category.
Event 1: Farmer’s Carry
One of the oldest of strongman events, the farmer’s carry consists of picking up The Beast Stones, one in each hand, and walking as far as possible. Competitors may drop and re-grip the stones as much as they wish. Distance will be measured.
Event 2: Stone Overhead Press Ladder
A serious test of pressing power and endurance, the stone overhead press will consist of three stones; each will be lifted from the ground one after the other in ascending weight and pressed overhead to elbow lockout. Competitors will be given a down signal for each successful lift. Number of successful lifts or ladders are recorded. Time limit: 2 minutes
Event 3: Stone to Shoulder
Each competitor will be given 2 minutes to see how many times they can lift the Dragon’s Head stone to their shoulder. Competitors are awarded points for each portion of a lift: 1 point for getting the stone off the ground; 5 points for putting the stone in the lap; 20 for bringing it to chest or shoulder level; 50 for successfully lifting the stone and placing it on the shoulder and being given the down signal. Points are recorded.
Finale Event 4: Shield Carry
Competitors will finish the Strongman Challenge by picking up the 230 lb Kenneth McClurg Purple Heart stone and carrying it by any means possible for distance. Distance is measured when stone is dropped.
We look forward to this exciting and intense competition!
