SOLO PIPING & PIPE BAND COMPETITION
The Ligonier Highland Games offers competitions for individual bagpipers, drum majors, and full pipe bands. There will be the thrilling spectacle of the massed bands performing at the official ceremonies at noon and later in the day before the awards ceremonies.
Starting at 9:00 AM pipers will compete in their various grade levels along the path from Idlewild's carousel down to the Soakzone area (see map of Park). The individually numbered judging stations will be easily identifiable by their large flipcharts listing competitor numbers. Spectators are welcome and encouraged to observe as the musicians compete for scores that will determine the award of medals and trophies at the end of the day.
Pipers will play marches and piobaireachd tunes(pronounced pea-brook). Piobaireachd is an ancient form of bagpipe music which starts with a simple melody and builds from that base to more complex musical movements. They will also play Strathspeys (a dance tune), and Reels (more dance music). Competitors are judged on the ability to stay in tune and the ability to play with precision.
The Ligonier Highland Games will also feature band competitions taking place on the main field in the early afternoon. Bands will compete in a marked circle on the competition field and will play a medley of Marches, Strathspeys and Reels, as well as standard March sets. Bands are judged on proper starts and stops, musicality, ability to stay in tune, and precision of play.
