CLAN GALBRAITH ORIGINATED IN THE STRATHCLYDE AREA AND WAS ESTABLISHED IN THE 12TH CENTURY.  GLABRAITH TRANSLATES TO BRITON STRANGER FROM THEIR MIXED BRITON - GAELIC HERITAGE.
THE CLAN'S HISTORIC SEAT WAS CULCREUCH CASTLE IN STIRLINGSHIRE AND THE FIRST RECORDED CHIEF GILCHRIST BRETNACH IS RECORDED AROUND THE YEAR 1200 NEAR LOCH LOMOND.  CLAN GALBRAITH PLAYED SIGNIFICANT ROLES IN SCOTLAND'S POLITICAL AND MILITARY HISTORY IN CONJUNCTION WITH NEIGHBORING CLANS AND THE HOUSE OF LENNOX.  THE CLAN CREST FEATURES A BEAR'S HEAD COUPED ARGENT, MUZZLED AZURE AND THE MOTTO IS "AB OBICE SAUVOIR" WHICH IS "SWEETER FOR THER HAVING BEEN DIFFICULTIES".

THE GALBRAITH TARTANS

The Clan Galbraith tartan is green and blue and black bands, and small black, red and white stripes.  The tartan is available in two variations: Modern and Ancient.
Picture
GALBRAITH MODERN
Modern tartans represent plaids that are made with chemical dyes, allowing for deeper and darker colors.  Modern dyes will not fade in the manner of the ancient tartans.
Picture
GALBRAITH ANCIENT
Ancient tartans represent plaids that were made with natural dyes.  They incorporate the primary color pattern of the clan.  However, they are lighter in shade, especially the blue, as time will fade the coloring on the tartan.

GALBRAITH HISTORY

DURING THE FIRST CENTURIES OF CHRISTIAN SCOTLAND, THE SOUTHERN HALF WAS DIVIDED INTO THREE KINGDOMS: STRATHCLYDE (INCLUDING GLASGOW), RHEGED AND GODODDIN (INCLUDING EDINBURGH).  THROUGHOUT THE DARK AGES, NORTHUMBRIAN ENGLISH INVASIONS DESTROYED ALL SOCIAL STRUCTURE, INCLUDING THE WELSH LANGUAGE, WHICH HAD BEEN IN USE UP TO THAT TIME.
DUMBARTON WAS STRATHCLYDE'S CAPITAL AND IT'S JUTTING ROCK BECAME KNOWN AS THE FORTRESS OF THE BRITONS.  ONE OF LOCH LOMONDS ISLANDS, INCHGALBRAITH, BECAME KNOWN AS THE ISLAND OF THE BRITISH FOREIGNER.

SCOTLAND BECAME A SINGLE KINGDOM IN 1124.  GILCHRIST BRETNACH BECAME THE FIRST CHIEF OF CLAN GALBRAITH AROUND 1200 AND WAS EQUAL TO THE ROYAL LENNOX FAMILY IN THE SCOTS ARISTOCTRATIC HIERARCHY HAVING MARRIED THE GRAND DAUGHTER OF THE 1ST EARL OF LENNOX AND RESIDING AT INCHGALBRAITH.
SIR ARTHUR WAS THE 5TH CHIEF OF CLAN GALBRAITH AND A SUPPORTER OF ROBERTH THE BRUCE, BENEFITTING FROM THE KING'S SUCCESS.
THE GALBRATIH TIES TO THE HOUSE OF LENNOX MEANT THAT JAMES I WANTED REVENGE WHEN HE RETURNED FROM ENGLISH IMPRISONMENT FOR THEIR LACK OF SUPPORT.  THE HOUSES OF ALBANY AND LENNOX WERE TARGETTED.  THE GALBRAITH CHIEF JAMES OF GILCREUCH HAD TO FLEE WITH 600 GALBRAITH FAMILIES TO GIGHA AND KINTYRE TO AVOID THE KING'S VENGEANCE.
UNTIL THE 16TH CENTURY THE GALBRAITHS BACKED THE HOUSE OF LENNOX, BUT ROBERT, THE 17TH CHIEF HAD A PERSONAL VENDETTA WITH THE CHIEF OF CLAN MacAULAY, LEADING TO HIS BEING LABELED AS A REBEL.  HE FLED TO IRELAND IN 1622 AND DIED THERE IN 1632.  HIS WEALTH CONFISCATED, THE GALBRAITH FORTUNES DECLINED AND HIS GRANDSON JAMES WAS THE 19TH CHIEF AND LAST OF HIS LINE.
